A brief description of the department:
The Department of Classics at the University at Buffalo offers the MA and PhD in Classics with concentrations in classical literature, ancient history, and Mediterranean archaeology. The Buffalo faculty is well known for scholarship in a variety of fields, especially Roman archaeology, ancient religion, Greek and Latin epic poetry, linguistics, epigraphy, Greek urbanism, and gender studies.

Particular strengths or unique areas of interest for the department: Roman archaeology; ancient religion; epic poetry

Average number of new graduate students per year: 2 PhD students; 4 MA students
Approximate percentage of applicants this represents: 15-20%

For “best consideration for admission”, applicants should have (note that there are always special cases, and that meeting the stated numerical goals will not guarantee admission to any program):
At least 1200 GRE; at least 3.5 GPA; 2 years of one ancient language and 1 year of the other ancient language

Approximate percentage of incoming students given full funding: 90%
Number of guaranteed years of funding: PhD students:3 years; MA students:4 years
Out of those years, number student will be expected or required to serve as TA, RA, or the like: Students must serve as TAs in order to receive funding.
