A brief description of the department:
Currently the department has five faculty members specializing in Greek Drama; Late Republican and Augustan Literature; Roman Cultural History; and Greek Art and Archaeology. The M.A. requires 10 graduate language courses, completion of a departmental reading list, and a pass on written and oral examinations. Students must demonstrate competence in a modern foreign language. Limited scholarship aid exists, chiefly as tuition remission. One T.A. position (stipend + tuition) is reserved for a second-year student.

Particular strengths or unique areas of interest for the department: Preparation for Ph.D. study or secondary teaching.

Writing sample required: Strongly recommended; 8-10 pp.; several short papers are acceptable.

Most critical is sufficient preparation to begin advanced language study and the suitability of the program goals to a student's plans.
