A brief description of the department:
We emphasize rigorous training in Latin and Greek as well as ancient history. Our faculty of 14 offers broad coverage of the field which is enhanced further by a consortium with Fordham and New York Universities that allows us to offer about nine graduate courses and seminars each semester covering a variety of subjects. We are also the home of the Latin/Greek Summer Institute, the Database of Classical Bibliography and an annual student conference.

Writing sample required: We require a research paper with notes and bibliography.
For “best consideration for admission”, applicants should have (note that there are always special cases, and that meeting the stated numerical goals will not guarantee admission to any program):
Successful applicants generally have verbal GREs over 600; high GPAs; and have completed advanced undergraduate courses in Latin and Greek.

Approximate percentage of incoming students given full funding: 33 % of the PhD students are fully funded; the rest generally receive partial support.
