A brief description of the department:
The Classics Department has a large and vibrant graduate program of ca. 45 students in both MA and PhD programs. We encourage students to explore the full breadth of the ancient world, and so are committed to interdisciplinary studies. We also train Latin teachers and prepare students for careers in Museum Studies.

Greek and Latin poetry, Classical Archaeology, Ancient History/Historiography, Roman Empire

For “best consideration for admission”, applicants should have (note that there are always special cases, and that meeting the stated numerical goals will not guarantee admission to any program):
For the doctoral program: a minimum 3.6 GPA overall and 3.8 GPA in upper division course work, 1300 on the GRE (650 verbal);
a minimum of two years each of college-level Greek and Latin with average grades of at least A-; well-developed writing abilities.

For MA programs: A BA degree with sufficient undergraduate work in classics to warrant study on the graduate level;
3.3 undergraduate grade point average (GPA) in all upper-division work and a minimum of GRE 1100.

MA: two years of funding

Out of those years, number student will be expected or required to serve as TA, RA, or the like: Fully funded students will normally serve as TA/RA in the first year, and teach their own courses, with supervision, in remaining years.
