A brief description of the department:
FSU Classics is a large and vibrant graduate program (50+ students), of whom well over half are MA students. We are committed to encouraging students to explore the full breadth of the ancient world, and so to interdisciplinary studies. We also train Latin teachers and prepare students for careers in Museum Studies.

Particular strengths or unique areas of interest for the department: Ancient History/Historiography, Greek and Latin poetry, Classical Archaeology, Roman Empire

For “best consideration for admission”, applicants should have (note that there are always special cases, and that meeting the stated numerical goals will not guarantee admission to any program):
For the doctoral program: 3.6 GPA overall and 3.8 GPA in upper division course work, 1300 on the GRE (650 verbal), Normally two years each of college-level Greek and Latin with average grades of at least A-, well-developed writing abilities.

For programs leading to the MA: A BA degree, A 3.3 undergraduate grade point average (GPA) in all upper-division work and a minimum of GRE 1100, Sufficient undergraduate work in classics to warrant study on the graduate level.

Approximate percentage of applicants this represents: less than 50%
Number of new students entering program this fall: 3 PhD, 17 MA

Approximate percentage of incoming students given full funding: 70%
Number of guaranteed years of funding: PhD - five years, MA - two years
Out of those years, number student will be expected or required to serve as TA, RA, or the like: Fully funded students will normally serve as TA/RA in the first year, and teach their own courses, with supervision, in remaining years.

Major changes anticipated in the department over the next few years, if any: We expect to make several new hires in coming years to enhance departmental strengths in ancient history/literature; no retirements are foreseen.
