A brief description of the department:
The Classics Department at Rutgers offers three graduate degrees: the MAT, MA, and PhD. The PhD program has both an ancient history and classical philology track. Our core and affiliated faculty represent strengths in Greek and Latin literature, Ancient History, Philosophy, Religion, Art History and Archaeology. Our students have opportunities to gain teaching experience in a wide variety of courses. We have had a strong placement rate of recent PhDs in tenure-track jobs.

Ancient History, Roman law and magistrates, Greek Music, Archaic and Classical Greek literature, Late Antiquity

Writing sample required: Writing sample of 10-20 pages, preferably related to research interests.
For “best consideration for admission”, applicants should have (note that there are always special cases, and that meeting the stated numerical goals will not guarantee admission to any program):
GRE of 650+ in verbal and 5+ in writing; GPA at least 3.3 overall and significantly higher in the major; 3-4 years of college Latin and 2-3 years of Greek (MAT students do not need Greek).

Major changes anticipated in the department over the next few years, if any: We have recently made several new hires and look forward to a period of stability, punctuated only by usual sabbatical leaves. A new hire in ancient philosophy (joint with philosophy) is expected sometime in the next couple of years.
