A brief description of the department:
The Tri-Campus program has a faculty of twenty five in Classics and related
disciplines from three University of California campuses (Irvine, Riverside,
and San Diego). The Program fosters close study of texts through
contemporary critical theory, social-scientific approaches, and close
attention to the cultural and historical context of the text and its
reception.
Particular strengths or unique areas of interest for the department: Cultural Contexts, Reception, Critic theory, Late Antiquity.
Average number of new graduate students per year: The Tri-Campus Graduate Program admits students to its Ph.D. program only. Historically the program has admitted 3-5 studentsFor “best consideration for admission”, applicants should have (note that there are always special cases, and that meeting the stated numerical goals will not guarantee admission to any program):
Students must have at least 92% verbal GRE in order to be considered for
certain fellowships. Students with lower scores may be admitted depending on
their general record.
Approximate percentage of incoming students given full funding: Every effort is made to secure funding for qualified admits. 75% of students
admitted to the program are usually offered some sort of financial package.
Number of guaranteed years of funding: Maximum: 6 years subject to satisfactory performance. Students must advance
to candidacy in 4 years.
Out of those years, number student will be expected or required to serve as TA, RA, or the like: No particular requirement. Students normally receive 3-4 years of TAships.

We anticipate an increase in the size of the faculty, with new hires expected
at UC Irvine.
