A brief description of the department:
The Department of Classics at the University of Florida fosters an integrated study of Greece and Rome that incorporates traditional as well as new and interdisciplinary approaches. We offer a wide range of graduate programs leading to the M.A. and PhD. Teaching assistantships, university fellowships, and departmental scholarships are available.

Writing sample required: A statement of purpose is required. A writing sample may also be submitted, but it is not required.
For “best consideration for admission”, applicants should have (note that there are always special cases, and that meeting the stated numerical goals will not guarantee admission to any program):
Combined GRE score on the qualitative and quantitative sections of at least 1200; twenty hours in one language and fifteen hours in the other language (Greek and Latin) for the MA in Classical Studies; six hours in one or more of the following: ancient history, ancient art, archaeology, philosophy, literary criticism, linguistics; GPA of at least a 3.2; deficiencies that can be corrected within one year will not necessarily prevent admission, if the record shows promise on other grounds.
Average number of new graduate students per year: 1-2 at the PhD Level, 3-4 at the MA Level.

Out of those years, number student will be expected or required to serve as TA, RA, or the like: Most financial support is in the form of teaching assistantships. PhD students receiving university awards typically are on fellowship support for two years and serve as an RA for one year and a TA for two years.
